Arianna (Ari) Binienda is the island’s new Education Coordinator for the Pigeon Key Foundation, filling the role after the previous Education Coordinator, Sarah Humphrey, stepped up to become the island’s Education Director. Arianna, a prior Education Intern for the 2025 season, is ecstatic to continue her journey with the Pigeon Key Foundation.
What is your role within the Pigeon Key Foundation?
As Education Coordinator, I assist Education Director Sarah Humphrey and Operations Director Chris Rowell in leading and planning for education groups, outreach events, and summer camps. I am also in charge of our marine science programs, ensuring they remain updated and engaging. Other responsibilities include running our social media accounts, maintaining inventories, and completing any miscellaneous jobs as they arise.
What is your background?
I was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, and spent my entire childhood in Connecticut. Growing up in New England, I always had a deep love for animals and a particular fascination with the ocean, which ultimately led me to the Gulf Coast of Florida. There, I studied Animal Studies and Marine Biology at Eckerd College. During my undergraduate years, I was a Biology Intern in New Mexico for the US Fish & Wildlife Service, where I was able to conduct field studies on endangered species. Throughout this internship I gained a strong passion for conservation and education, and I knew it was a route I wanted to pursue. Merely one month post-graduation, I moved down to the Florida Keys to become a 2025 Marine Science Education Intern on the island. This internship gave me so many new skills and experiences that I am so grateful for. I am thrilled to transition into the Education Coordinator position!
What is your favorite part of your job?
It is extremely hard to pick just one favorite part of my job. I love that we are outside every day! From tidepooling & snorkeling, to weedwhacking & trimming, you can’t go wrong with the views from the island. I also love the opportunity to engage with kids from all over and inspire a sense of stewardship for marine animals and environments.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I enjoy exploring the Florida Keys, particularly through snorkeling, paddle boarding, and SCUBA diving! When I am just trying to relax, nothing beats staying on the island for dinner and a sunset on the dock
What is your best Pigeon Key memory?
My favorite Pigeon Key memories consist of sunsets and fishing off the dock with my fellow interns. There was nothing better than watching and cheering each other on as we caught our first sharks and tarpon!
And the most important question of all… what is your favorite sea creature?
I’d have to say my favorite sea creature is the Spotted Eagle Ray. I love how they look like they are flying underwater with their big, wing-like fins. Although they are large and powerful creatures, they still move with so much patience and peace. I’ve been lucky enough to see them a few times out at the reef, and every time feels so magical!
