We were honored last month to be nominated as one of Marathon’s best summer camps for the 2021 Best of Marathon awards hosted by Keys Weekly newspapers. The Keys Weekly annual awards contest accepted online votes all month of September and the people have spoken. Pigeon Key Marine Science Center was chosen as the winner! We are so grateful for the support from not only our local community, but also those who voted from all over the country.
Our Summer Camp season is 5 weeks of fun in the sun. Campers are immersed in the habitats surrounding the island and get a crash-course in all topics that are related to marine science. We fish off of our dock, snorkel at Sombrero Reef, collect organisms from our shoreline, and get the chance to dissect squid and sharks! We spend a lot of time in the water to cool off, but field games are always a favorite.
Summer camp allows kids the opportunity to meet new friends, explore their interests and be goofy. We pride ourselves on our camper return rate and our staff have a long list of campers that started as young kids and aged out as teenagers. It is amazing to watch campers appreciate the natural world around them and live the island life on Pigeon Key. It is a highlight of the year for our staff.
We were able to navigate hosting our summer camp amidst the pandemic in 2020 and 2021. It has not been an easy transition, but with changes such as outdoor classrooms, we had a successful season. If you are interested in having your child attend our summer camps, follow our social media accounts listed below for updates on the registration process. You can also contact our Education and Camp Director at Casey@pigeonkey.net to be added to the latest email list.
Camper Registration for our 2022 summer camps will begin in January of 2022.
