If you’ve visited the island recently and follow us on social media, you may have noticed a few of our buildings are looking a bit brighter! We recently had our buildings repainted back to the iconic Flagler Yellow. Flagler Yellow takes its name from Henry Flagler, a prominent figure in American history renowned for his contributions to the development of Florida. Born in 1830, Flagler was a visionary entrepreneur, investor, and pioneer who played a pivotal role in transforming Florida into a vibrant center of commerce and tourism during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The color Flagler Yellow draws its inspiration from the sunny landscapes and golden beaches of Florida, a state that Henry Flagler helped to shape through his ambitious ventures in railroads, hotels, and urban planning. Henry Flagler first used this shade of yellow on his luxurious Ponce de Leon Hotel (now Flagler College). Other former hotels sharing this color included the Alcazar Hotel (now the Lightner Museum), and the Casa Monica Hotel (now the Casa Monica Resort & Spa) This color was also used on a few of his railcars, and even on all of his train depots! Flagler originally chose this color for the buildings on the island back in the early 1900s when the island was used as a work camp for the construction of the Old Seven Mile Bridge. He thought it would be a cheerful color for the workers, and it helped to show any damages or marks better than most colors. Nowadays, Flagler Yellow is a popular color available for purchase at any hardware or paint store, and can be seen on a variety of buildings throughout Florida.
You can come check out these beautiful historic buildings every day of the week from 9:00AM to 4:00PM! We also have a trolley that can drive you to the island via the Old Seven Mile Bridge. Four guided tours are offered daily, giving you a chance to come learn about our history in part with the railroad and the history of the island. We also offer a shark feeding as part of our 1:00PM tour each day.
